Our Technology
The Science Behind Rapid QCanna
When you need accurate results fast, the technology behind the test matters. Rapid QCanna tests are built on lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) technology, the same proven science used in pregnancy tests, COVID-19 rapid tests, and medical diagnostics worldwide. We’ve adapted this reliable platform specifically for the unique challenges of cannabis testing.
With 45+ years of diagnostic development experience at Gila Bioscience, we didn’t license someone else’s technology or rebrand an existing product. We developed our cannabis testing platform from the ground up, optimizing every component for accuracy, ease of use, and reliability in real-world cannabis production environments.
How Lateral Flow Immunoassay Technology Works
Lateral flow immunoassay is an elegant, well-established diagnostic technology. Here’s how it works in our cannabis testing applications:
The Basic Principle
LFIA technology uses antibodies, proteins that bind specifically to target molecules, to detect the presence of analytes in a sample. When you apply a cannabis extract to a Rapid QCanna test device, the following sequence occurs:
Sample application: The extracted cannabis sample is applied to the sample port of the test device.
Antibody binding: As the sample flows along the test strip, target molecules (THC, THCA, or Aspergillus antigens) bind to labeled antibodies.
Lateral flow: The sample-antibody complexes migrate laterally across the membrane via capillary action.
Detection zone: At the test line, immobilized capture antibodies trap the target-antibody complexes, producing a visible line.
Control verification: A separate control line confirms the test has run properly, validating the result.

The intensity of the test line corresponds to the concentration of the target analyte, allowing for either qualitative (presence/absence) or semi-quantitative (concentration range) results depending on the test design.

Purpose-Built for Cannabis: Our Development Process
While LFIA technology is well-established, applying it to cannabis testing required significant R&D to address the unique challenges of cannabis as a matrix:
Complex plant matrix
Cannabis contains hundreds of compounds -cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, lipids - that can interfere with antibody binding. Our extraction protocol and test chemistry are optimized to isolate target analytes while minimizing matrix effects.
High cannabinoid concentrations
Unlike most diagnostic applications where target concentrations are low, cannabis flower contains THC at percentage levels. Our tests are calibrated for the 5-30% THC range typical of commercial cannabis.
THCA vs. THC distinction
Raw cannabis contains mostly THCA, which converts to THC when heated. Our potency tests account for both forms to give you an accurate picture of total potential THC.
Species-specific Aspergillus detection
Our microbial test uses antibodies that specifically target the four regulated Aspergillus species (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, A. terreus) without cross-reacting with other common molds.
Real-world usability
Cannabis production environments aren’t sterile labs. Our tests are designed to perform reliably in cultivation facilities, processing areas, and distribution centers, not just controlled laboratory conditions.

Quality Assurance
Every Rapid QCanna test is manufactured in-house at our facility under strict quality control protocols:
Lot testing: Every production lot is tested against known reference standards before release
Stability testing: Ongoing verification that tests perform consistently throughout their shelf life
Component control: All antibodies, membranes, and reagents are sourced from qualified suppliers and verified on receipt
Environmental controls: Manufacturing areas maintain controlled temperature and humidity to ensure consistent product quality
Our Testing Products
We’ve applied our LFIA platform to three critical cannabis testing applications:

Rapid QCanna Cannabis Potency Test
Semi-quantitative THC measurement in the 2.5-30% range. Uses a visual grading card to determine THC concentration. Ideal for harvest timing optimization and batch consistency verification.

Rapid QCanna Hemp Potency Test
Pass/fail screening at the 0.3% Total THC compliance threshold. Calibrated specifically for the low-THC range critical to hemp compliance. Helps hemp producers monitor crops and avoid hot hemp.

Rapid QCanna Aspergillus Test
Quantitative detection (cfu/mL) of the four regulated Aspergillus species using a Visual Grading Card. Screens for A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and A. terreus - the pathogens that trigger automatic compliance failure.
Experience the Technology
Rapid QCanna tests combine proven lateral flow immunoassay technology with 45+ years of diagnostic development expertise. The result: fast, reliable testing that gives you the data you need to make confident decisions without waiting days for lab results. See the technology in action.
