Aspergillus Test:

Detect Harmful Pathogens in 15 Minutes

Aspergillus contamination is invisible, dangerous, and devastating when discovered at compliance testing. A single positive result can mean batch destruction, lost revenue, and potential harm to consumers, especially immunocompromised patients who rely on cannabis for medical treatment.

The Rapid QCanna Aspergillus Test puts microbial screening in your hands. Detect the presence of the four pathogenic Aspergillus species regulated in most cannabis markets - A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and A. terreus -in just 15 minutes. Screen incoming material, verify batches post-drying, and confirm product safety before sending samples for official compliance testing.

Why Every Cannabis Operation Needs Aspergillus Screening

Aspergillus isn’t just mold, it’s a family of pathogenic fungi that can cause serious, potentially fatal infections in vulnerable individuals. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and people living with HIV/AIDS are at particular risk. For these patients, inhaling Aspergillus spores from contaminated cannabis can lead to invasive aspergillosis, a condition with mortality rates as high as 30-95% depending on the patient population.

Even healthy consumers can experience allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and other health effects from Aspergillus exposure. The CDC identifies Aspergillus as a significant public health concern, which is why most regulated cannabis markets require testing for these organisms.

CDC reports that invasive aspergillosis has a mortality rate of 30-95% in immunocompromised patients →

Beyond health concerns, Aspergillus contamination creates significant business risks:

  • Compliance failure: Presence of regulated Aspergillus species is typically an automatic fail - no threshold, no margin of error.
  • Batch destruction: Contaminated flower usually cannot be remediated and must be destroyed.
  • Testing costs: Lab testing fees are non-refundable, whether you pass or fail.
  • Production delays: Failed batches mean missed delivery commitments and lost sales.
  • Reputation damage: Buyers and dispensaries lose confidence in suppliers with contamination issues.

WHY ASPERGILLUS TESTING MATTERS

Target Organisms

The Aspergillus Test detects the four species most commonly regulated in cannabis markets:

A. fumigatus

Most common cause of invasive aspergillosis; easily inhaled deep into lungs

A. flavus

Produces aflatoxins (carcinogenic mycotoxins); common in warm climates

A. niger

Common black mold; produces ochratoxin A; causes ear and respiratory infections

A. terreus

Resistant to common antifungal treatments; high mortality when infection occurs

How to Run the Rapid QCanna Aspergillus Test

Step 1: Weigh and Add Sample

Weigh out 0.15g of flower and place into the pre-filled tube.

Step 2: Shake

Shake the tube vigorously by hand for 30 seconds.

Step 3: Transfer to Cassette Sample Port

Add 6-7 drops of sample to the Cassette Sample Port.

Step 4: wait 15 minutes

After 15 minutes, interpret the results of the test device using the visual grading card or place cassette into the read for a digital readout to determine YES/NO or cfu/g of Aspergillus in sample.

Understanding Your Test Results

The Aspergillus Test provides quantitative results using the Visual Grading Card, allowing you to determine the cfu/mL (colony forming units per milliliter) of Aspergillus in your sample. Here’s how to interpret your results:

Negative / Very Low

Below detection threshold

Continue QC workflow; submit for compliance testing

Medium

Moderate contamination

Quarantine batch; investigate source before proceeding

Invalid

No control line visible.

Retest with new device; check procedure

Low

Low contamination level

Evaluate risk; consider additional testing or investigation

High

High contamination level

Quarantine immediately; do NOT submit for compliance; investigate

What to Do with Your Results

If Low/No Detection:

  • Product passed pre-compliance screening for Aspergillus
  • Continue with your QC workflow and other required testing
  • Submit to lab for official compliance testing when ready
  • Document results for your quality records

If High Detection:

  • Do NOT submit this batch for compliance testing (it will likely fail)
  • Quarantine the affected material immediately
  • Investigate the source of contamination
  • Evaluate remediation options if permitted in your state
  • Test adjacent batches or material from the same source
  • Review and strengthen contamination prevention protocols

Aspergillus Test vs. Laboratory Testing

The Rapid QCanna Aspergillus Test is designed to complement - not replace - official laboratory compliance testing. Here’s how they work together:

The Cost of Not Pre-Screening

Z

Lab microbial testing

$75-$200 per sample

Z

Batch destruction value

$5,000-$50,000+ depending on batch size

Z

Rapid pre-screening

A fraction of lab costs per test

When to Use the Aspergillus Test

Post-Harvest / Post-Drying

Post-Harvest / Post-Drying

Test after drying but before curing or long-term storage. The drying process is a critical vulnerability point where contamination can develop or become detectable. Catching it here prevents spreading to other inventory.

Incoming Material Verification

Incoming Material Verification

For processors, distributors, and dispensaries: screen flower received from suppliers before accepting or processing. Don’t rely solely on supplier COAs, verify with your own testing to protect your operation from contaminated inputs.

Pre-Compliance Screening

Pre-Compliance Screening

Before sending samples to the lab for official compliance testing, screen internally. If rapid testing detects Aspergillus, you’ve saved the cost of lab testing on product that would fail anyway and you can investigate and address the contamination source.

Contamination Investigation

Contamination Investigation

If a batch fails lab testing for Aspergillus, use rapid tests to screen other batches from the same source, growing area, or processing line. Quickly identify the scope of contamination and protect unaffected inventory.

Risk Operations Monitoring

Risk Operations Monitoring

If your facility has experienced contamination issues in the past, or if your environment presents elevated risk (high humidity, outdoor grows, older facilities), increase testing frequency at critical control points throughout production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this test for official state compliance?

No. Official compliance testing must be performed by a licensed laboratory using validated methods (typically qPCR). The Rapid QCanna Aspergillus Test is designed for internal quality control and pre-compliance screening, catching contamination before you pay for lab testing.

Which Aspergillus species does this test detect?

The test detects the four pathogenic Aspergillus species regulated in most cannabis markets: A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and A. terreus. These are the species most commonly associated with human disease.

How does this differ from total yeast and mold (TYM) testing?

TYM testing counts all yeast and mold (measured in CFU/g), while the Aspergillus Test specifically targets the four pathogenic species. A sample could pass TYM limits but fail if any of the four Aspergillus species is detected. Both tests serve different purposes and are typically both required for compliance.

How do I read the Visual Grading Card?

The Visual Grading Card provides reference images that correspond to different cfu/mL levels. Compare your test result to the card to determine the quantitative Aspergillus level in your sample. Detailed instructions are included in each kit.

How often should I test for Aspergillus?

At minimum: after drying (before storage or curing), when receiving material from suppliers, and before sending samples for compliance testing. High-risk operations should test more frequently throughout production.

What should I do if the test detects Aspergillus?

Quarantine the affected material immediately. Do NOT submit for compliance testing. Investigate the contamination source, test adjacent batches, and evaluate remediation options if permitted in your state. Review your prevention protocols to address the root cause.

How should I store the test kits?

Store kits at room temperature (59–86°F / 15–30°C) in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Shelf life is 12 months from manufacture when stored properly.
